Set off to discover the natural world Plain version

In the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, life reveals itself with every step. Wildlife, flora, unspoilt landscapes and outdoor activities invite you to observe, listen and understand an environment of exceptional richness. Here, nature is as much to be discovered as it is to be experienced, to the rhythm of chance encounters and moments of wonder.

The Voices of the Mountain

Set off to encounter the living world and discover the people who keep the heart of the mountains beating. Passionate shepherds, dedicated beekeepers, livestock farmers, craftspeople and local stakeholders open the doors to their worlds and share expertise passed down through the generations. As you wander along the trails, you’ll also come across unspoilt nature where wildlife roams freely: birds of prey, marmots, deer and many other mountain dwellers. An authentic immersion in traditions, human encounters and natural riches.

Portrait of Jean VERGEZ BELLOU Beekeeper

Deep in the mountains, the beekeeper passionately tends to his hives and safeguards the delicate balance between nature and biodiversity. As the seasons change, he supports the bees’ work, harvests the flavours of the region and preserves authentic traditional skills.

Jean Vergez Bellou, a committed beekeeper who holds the Esprit Parc National label, among others, produces a range of honeys in Luz-Saint-Sauveur

You can find his honey at the market or enquire at the Miellerie du Pays Toy

Preserving biodiversity, landscapes and the built and cultural heritage; welcoming the public so that they can enjoy this heritage whilst respecting it; reconciling nature conservation with economic activities; and contributing to the sustainable development of the valleys: these are the objectives of a National Park. To protect, we must understand. To this end, studies are being carried out by staff at the Pyrenees National Park and its partners across the region. Compiling inventories of animal and plant species, studying the climate… all this research enables us to propose appropriate management strategies. This can also lead to the reintroduction of extinct species, or the restoration of threatened native animal and plant species.
