At 2,877 metres, the Pic du Midi offers the most stunning view of the Pyrenees from its panoramic terraces and invites you on a journey amongst the stars thanks to its observatory, telescopes, astronomy museum and stargazing evenings.

Your visit begins with a 15-minute cable car ride from La Mongie, after which you’ll discover the spectacular view from the terraces. After taking a moment to admire the view from the ‘Ponton dans le ciel’, you’ll visit the interactive exhibits to learn more about the scientific adventure of this unique site, the International Dark Sky Reserve (RICE), and the historical instruments and artefacts used at the Pic du Midi.

How to get there:

From Luz, drive to La Mongie via Barèges then the Tourmalet road (in summer, 45 mins) or via Lourdes and Bagnères-de-Bigorre (in winter, 1 hour 15 mins).

Cable car service runs daily in summer from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm and in winter from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm, every 15 minutes
Closed between 12.30 pm and 2.00 pm outside the summer holidays (and at 5.30 pm) and during winter
Annual closure from 19 April to 22 May 2026 and from 2 November to 5 December 2026

Children under 3, pregnant women and people with heart conditions are not permitted due to the site’s altitude.

The Pic du Midi International Dark Sky Reserve (RICE) protects and promotes the exceptional quality of the night sky in the Hautes-Pyrénées. More than half of the Hautes-Pyrénées region is committed to combating light pollution.

Originally a concern for astronomers, this issue now also affects the environment, culture and the economy: the starry sky is now recognised as a genuine natural and cultural heritage asset that must be preserved.
