Take on the Tour’s giants Head for the mountain passes

Every turn of the pedals brings you closer to a page of history. From the village of Luz Saint Sauveur, the road climbs, the hairpin bends follow one after another, and legendary names come to life beneath your wheels. To take on the giants of the Tour de France – Tourmalet, Ardiden, Col des Tentes – is to embrace the challenge, feel the gradient, listen to your own breathing and look up at panoramas that live up to the legend. An intense experience to be enjoyed on your bike.

Challenges for the champions

Come on, we’d love for you to join us on a 19km ride from the centre of Luz-Saint-Sauveur (kilometre zero) to climb the legendary Col du Tourmalet. In the mountains, the terrain makes victory all the more rewarding. You won’t be alone in your polka-dot jersey as you tackle the devilish hairpin bends of Luz Ardiden to reach this exceptional finish on the Tour de France route.

Other spectacular panoramic views on the edge of the Pyrenees National Park and more secluded routes around the Troumouse and Gavarnie cirques await you on two wheels.

Get kitted out!

A bike in perfect condition is essential to ensure your holiday isn’t ruined!

The cyclist’s checklist:

  • Check your tyres.
  • Adjust your gears (yes, you know, that ‘clicking’ noise that gets on your nerves when you’re climbing a pass,…)
  • Check your brakes (it’s uphill here, but it goes downhill too!!)
  • Wear a helmet (to protect your ‘little head’)
  • Tighten your wheels properly (just the right ones, right?)
  • Take your mobile (it always comes in handy…)

Get ready!

From challenging routes to a Sunday stroll, preparing in advance for your outing is particularly important.

  • Make sure you stay well hydrated and eat properly before, during and after your outing. Plan your route, and don’t hesitate to consult a guide.
  • Check the weather forecast so you can dress appropriately; don’t hesitate to set off in the morning – the weather can change quickly in the mountains in the afternoon!

Security

  • The Highway Code applies to all road users in all circumstances
  • Wearing a helmet is recommended
  • Make sure you are visible in the evening, at night and in avalanche barriers
  • When descending, keep your speed down and do not cut corners on winding roads
  • In summer, some roads can be very busy: set off in the morning when it’s cooler
  • Respect the environment and do not litter along the roadside.

Tour de France An experience not to be missed

Every summer, the village comes alive to the rhythm of the Tour! Nestled at the foot of the iconic Tourmalet and Luz Ardiden mountain passes, Luz is regularly one of the highlight stages of this legendary race. The sight of the cyclists passing through, the buzz in the streets, the cheers from spectators who’ve come from all over Europe… it’s something you simply must experience at least once in your lifetime!

Did you know that?

If you’re a fan of thrilling sporting stories, you’re bound to be familiar with the legend of the Tourmalet, which we owe in part to Eugène Christophe’s broken fork and the sculpture of the Giant, created in honour of Octave Lapize, the first cyclist to cross the pass in the lead during the 1910 Tour de France.
