Hiking in the great outdoors Viscos Peak

Taking in a beautiful view, cooling off in the woodland or by a lake, admiring the rustic barns and hilltop villages, or simply having a nap at altitude – these are all reasons to put on your walking boots, grab your rucksack, grab an IGN map or a guidebook, and set off on an adventure along the hiking trails.

Look towards Cauterets Viscos Peak

4.45 am LA BOUCLE A holiday in Cauterets

Jutting out like a canine tooth where the valleys of Luz and Cauterets meet, the Pic de Viscos is an iconic peak visible from the plain. Follow the path to the Tuc des Arribans, walk along the vertiginous ridges with the utmost caution, and make one final push to the metal cross at an altitude of 2,141 metres. A breathtaking panorama awaits you at the top!

1Bédéret car park ( Luz-Ardiden ski resort)
  • At the far end of the car park, take the track and follow it for 750 metres to the mountain restaurant (closed in summer).
Go round it on the right.

2The Riou Pass
  • Leave the track and head up to the left along a wide grassy path.
The path crosses a stream and then turns right.
After a hairpin bend, climb to the right (caution – make sure you follow the red-and-white markings of the GR10).
Rejoin the track further up and follow it to the left as far as the Col de Riou (1,949 m).

3Soum de Counques
  • Head off to the right towards the ruins, go round them on the right and continue along a long, level stretch through vast mountain pastures.
The path joins the ridge at Soum de Counques, then descends along the rocky ridge (take care – there are exposed sections) to a small pass (1,980 m).

4Pic de Viscos
  • Continue straight ahead along the steep, rugged path that climbs up the southern slope to the summit of Viscos (2,141 m).

5Descent back to the small pass
  • From the summit, head back down the same route to the small pass.

6Counques Hut
  • Take the path on the left which cuts into the slope and winds its way down to a junction.
Turn right and follow a long traverse along the hillside heading south.
After crossing a stream, you’ll reach the Counques hut.

7Bédéret Restaurant
  • Take a flat track heading south and follow it for 1.4 km to the mountain restaurant.

5Arrival
  • Take the same route you took on the way there to get back to the car park.

It is recommended that you use the services of a mountain professional (guide or leader) when hiking this summer route (to be undertaken when there is no snow).
